The IBB re-opens her doors for this exciting and creative New Year with the presentation of one of her international guest artists. Otobong Nkanga (Nigeria, ’74), residing at our institute for four weeks, engaged in a daring new project with the students of our orientation course. Focused on the construction of spaces and especially the appearance of architecture, the project built up to a joint building consisting of different facades.
Through conversations and discussions on the reality of dream-houses the model construction gained content.
As for many contemporary artists the free standing disciplines in art – like drawing, painting, sculpting or performance - do not seem to suffice anymore in finding ways to express with the process of the visual arts, Nkanga also takes the path of multi-disciplinary ways of expression. Not only by using performance – in which her exquisite vocal sounds are often also entering the stage – but also installations and photography. As drawing seems to be the laboratory of all ideas, Nkanga uses this medium to explore her thoughts, stories and memories of the past and present. In the recently published book entitled _‘No Be Today Story O!’_, her series of drawings _Filtered Memories, Social Consequences I and II_ clearly can be seen as the basis for her work which found their way into universal images on constructed memories and the voids in our minds.
Nkanga started her education at the Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, where after she continued her studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Continuing her research in the arts she was admitted to the prestigious Dutch ‘Rijksacademie’ in Amsterdam where she stayed for two years. Nkanga obtained her Master degree in Performance Art at Dasarts in Amsterdam in 2008.

Het IBB opent haar deuren voor dit nieuwe jaar wederom met de presentatie van internationale gastkunstenaar van formaat. Otobong Nkanga (Nigeria, ’74) verbleef gedurende 4 weken aan ons instituut alwaar zij een project met de leerlingen van onze oriëntatiecursus deed met de focus de geconstrueerde ruimte en met name haar ‘uiterlijk’. De opdracht ontketende zich tot een aaneengeschakeld bouwwerk van façades dat door de gesprekken over de realiteit van onze droomhuizen haar inhoud kreeg.
Zoals voor vele contemporaine kunstenaars zijn de afzonderlijke disciplines binnen de kunst – tekenen, schilderen, driedimensionaal werken, performance, etc. – niet meer de te volgen weg binnen het beeldend proces. Hetgeen te zeggen valt, heeft vaak verschillende expressievormen nodig om de vele aspecten van ‘het beeld’ tot uitdrukking te brengen. Dit geldt ook voor Nkanga. Niet alleen perfomance – waarbij zij ook vaak haar intense stemgeluid inzet – maar ook installaties en fotografie maken deel uit van haar beeldtaal. Het tekenen geldt in dit proces altijd als basis, het laboratorium voor het uitwerken van gedachten. Nkanga maakte tot op heden een aantal series tekeningen – waaronder _Filtered Memories, Social Consequences I and II_ – die recent werden gepubliceerd in een zeer bijzondere boekvorm onder de titel _‘No Be Today Story O!’_. Wie het werk van Nkanga zorgvuldig bekijkt, ziet hoezeer de persoonlijke gebeurtenissen in haar leven en de plaatsen en geconstrueerde ruimtes die zij bezocht, de basis vormen voor tekeningen die uitgroeien tot universeel verhaal dat op vele verschillende wijzen verteld kan worden.
Nkanga begon haar studie aan de Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, waarna zij vervolgens naar Parijs vertrok om zich te verdiepen aan de École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Na twee jaar aan de Rijksacademie in Amsterdam te hebben geresideerd, behaalde zij vervolgens in 2008 haar Master in Performing Arts aan het prestigieuze Dasarts instituut te Amsterdam.
Hierbij nodigen wij u van harte uit bij de presentatie van deze bijzondere gast op _dinsdag 4 januari 2011, van 18:30 tot 20:30 uur _op het terrein van de Dr. D.R. _Capriles Kliniek_ in Groot Kwartier (_gebouw Orkidia*_). Otobong Nkanga zal hierbij vertellen over haar werk in het algemeen en het project dat zij op Curaçao uitvoerde.
