Festival di sine (25-31 yuli 2011) - Filmfestival

Den e siman di 25 te ku 31 di juli 2011 tin un festival di sine di Haiti. Pa kuminsa sinti e ambiente di Haiti Jan Sebon un artista Haitiano ku ta biaha ront mundu ku su musika lo tin un presentashon, djarason 20 di juli 2011, 19:30 na Latentashon (Luna Yen). Jan Sebon a traha huntu ku algun hoben di Bandariba I Bandabou I  a siñanan kanta Kreol. Lo nan trese kantikanan na ambos idioma, Papiamentu i Kreol.  Entrada pa Luna Yen ta f 15,-.

Title: HAITI TREMBLES

Synopsis: Images and retelling of the disaster that took place on February 12th, 2010 in Haiti.

Title: COUSINES

Length: 95 minutes
Synopsis: Jessica is a Haitian woman whose quiet life in Port-au-Prince gets upside-down when her father dies out of a sudden. Without him to pay the bills, she will soon find herself on the street. But she has herself deceived by her friend Juana, a woman who earns her luxurious life thanks to the “generosity” of her many lovers. When Juana is hospitalized, Jessica remains with some difficult decisions to make. Is she going to succumb to temptation of Juana’s life style and to the promises of a rich and handsome suitor, or is she going to embrace a simple life and the love of her partner Bobby? Surrounded by the exuberant Haitian landscape, this is about an all-round look to temptation and decisions some people have to make in order to survive.


Title: MASTER ISSA
Director: FRANTZ VOLTAIRE
Synopsis: The clarinetist, arranger and orchestra conductor of Palestine origins, Issa El Saieh, travelled during his youth from Haiti to the USA to study music, and when he returned to Port-au-Prince he created his own band. From this valuable artist’s testimony, the great documentary Master Issa establishes a retelling about music and context back on the 40’s and 50’s decades, making particular emphasis on the constant flow of musical exchange between Haiti and Cuba. Among these bands there are some of the best Haitian musicians and Cuban artist like Celia Cruz, Bebo Valdés and Dámaso Pérez Prado.


Title: DEAR HAITI

Synopsis: Set at the “bateyes” (shanty town settled by the sugar cane plantations in the Dominican Republic), the film captured cane cutters’ life and the conditions they have to bear. Most of them are immigrants from Haiti who have run away from misery and violence in their country, looking for a new life. However, it has turned out to be a modern form of slavery. Jean-Baptiste (Valentin Valdez) and Magdaleine (Yeraini Cuevas) are married and they work in these plantations. After their baby died of starvation, they start considering going back home, even when their families had been killed by the army.

Synopsis: A short film that captures live and work of the important Haitian painter Jean-Claude “Tiga” Garoute.

Title: POTO MITAN
Director: RENEE BERGAN/ MARK SCHULLER
Synopsis: Through the stories of five valorous and hardworking Haitian women’s life, Poto Mitan describes the global economy, a human face. Each woman explains, through her personal story, the neoliberal globalization: what it is, and how it affects Haiti. And while Poto Mitan offers a deep comprehension of Haiti, his approach to women, subjugation, workers’ exploitation, poverty and resistance, he shows that those are all global struggles.

Title: DEW’S GOVERNORS

Synopsis: When the young Haitian Miguel returns to his motherland, he finds his community buried in a huge drought and divided by the hostility between two families. Manuel finds a natural flow of ground water and tries to bring together the rival families, but he is killed for jealousy. The union between his girlfriend and his mother avoids revenge and brings harmony to the community that starts building together the canal.

Title: DOES THE PRESIDENTE HAVE AIDS?

Synopsis: Dao is the star of most Haitian films. He calls himself “President of the Rhythm”. Women fall for him and men imitate him. He feels invincible and he has a star life –sex, drugs and alcohol– but it is getting too hard for him to keep the secret about the disease that threaten to put an end to his career. Despite the pressure made by his agent, he denies to have some tests run, as he starts getting involved in rituals, magic spells and the church. During one of his concerts, he recues Nina from the suspicious proposals of Larieux, a wealthy and powerful business man to whom her mother wishes to marry her. A romance emerges between Dao and Nina. Larieux plans to take revenge.
