Welcome to the new class of 2011-2012. With much pride we’d like to announce that we started the year with 16 new students who are going to follow the orientation course at IBB. Together with the 11 “old” students who stayed at IBB from last year, we end up at a grand total of 27 students that shall discover their creative talents this year.
We would like to present them to you:
Shudarly Anthony, Marichel Boye, Brailly Bishop, Amber Burgos, Roxette Capriles, Adrianna van Delden, Fabianne van Esveld, Ishairo Gibson, Tamika Lont, Vincent Lauffer, Gabriela Maduro, Anapjetra Martina, Kristel Rigaud, Gerardus ‘Dominic’ Schmetz, Shurendy Windster, Inez Loods.
Quently Barbara, Elvis Chen, Eunice Herminia, Remco Liqui-lung, Jordan Nita, Frifabian Plantijn, Letitia Roerhorst, Hermannus Rojer, Herge Statie, Uriel Symor, Timothy Voges.
In co-operation with the “plein art Curacao Art Festival” and sponsor Curacao Ports Authorithy (CPA), IBB has been invited to make two murals on the walls of the Rif Stadium in Otrobanda. On September 2 and 3 our students set out to paint the walls under guidance of Bade, Martha, the artists in residency Liesbeth Labeur and the local guest artist at IBB Jeroen Singer.
Here follows a short retrospective of the rif paintings made by a three of our students; Kristel Rigaud, Roxette Capriles and Remco Liqui-Lung.
We got the assignment to paint two walls near the mega pier in Otrabanda. This was for a most of us the first project that we would do at IBB, as this was also the introduction days for the new students. We had to work directly with paint on the walls, without using sketches or other aids. This made some of us nervous but we were eager to find out how this would work out.
The students and (ex)patients of the Capriles Clinic were divided in two groups and each one was given a wall and a theme to work with. The themes were LOVE and COURAGE. At love you could think about who or what you found important in your life, and at courage you could think about what was the most courageous thing you have done in your life.
The wall that had to be painted with the love theme was guided by Tirzo Martha and artist in residence Liesbeth Labeur. We started by putting forth all of our ideas. It had to be something or someone that was very important in our lives. For most people this was a family member. After this everyone got a section of the wall and we started working. The group dynamic was great. It was great to see how a couple of students would change ideas while they were working and started painting something completely different from what they were doing to that point. The work started to have a lot of improvisation. Technically that way it fit better with the jazz festival that was going on at that time. One way or another our ideas fit together and became a unity.
The wall with the theme of courage was guided by David Bade and Jeroen Singer. Jeroen Singer had a temporary atelier at IBB as a local artist. Heroic things resulted to to be pretty differentiated between the students and the ex patients of the clinic. For one their vertigo was the thing while for the other standing in the spotlight was it. Or a personal victory to have the courage to stick out a hand and ask for help with their addiction.
Our goal was to integrate everything in a clear composition. We went to work and we immediately felt at home. The second day we had a better vision is our heads and the day went pretty smooth. We took a look from a distance to decide if it really was done and after a few final touches by David and Jeroen we came to the conclusion that we were very satisfied with the job.
This project made us very happy and we are looking forward to the next two years at IBB. We feel that it is going to be a great time.
_Workshop: David Bade_
Portrait drawing
The first workshop of the year was given by artist and teacher David Bade. A classic start of the IBB year with the drawing of portraits using pencils and charcoal.
Objectives of the workshop: See, observe, recognize the proportions of a face.
_Artist in residence:_
Within the framework of the residency program at the IBB in co-operation with the Fund for Visual Arts in Amsterdam we had the Dutch artist Liesbeth Labeur as a guest. She studied fine arts at the AKV St. Joost in Breda. A great part of her artworks have a modern and graphic character; like the glossy magazine Calvijn(2009) that was sold out within the day, or the graphic novel ‘Op weg naar zoar (on the road to Zoar)’(2010) that was crowned the literaty comic of that year.
Labeur worked on a project covering the last days of Shell on Curacao. For three months she delved into the influence of Shell on Curacao. The insights that she has gathered will be combined into a comic. People won’t be the protagonists in the (graphic)novel that Labeur is working on –which will be released in February–; instead these will be played by goats. One main character is called Ka while the other one is called Brie(t). By joining these two names you end up with Kabriet which is a Dutch name for goats.
Shell is the backdrop for the story of two girls that grow up during the heyday of Shell. One of the girls is white and the other one is colored.
Labeur, who as a young girl lived as a Shell-child for 10 years on Curacao, looks back at the Shell period with mixed feelings altho it’s steeped in nostalgia. “Sometimes world fit beautifully together and sometimes it appears to squeeze. But in my head it always fits and otherwise I try to find it in my work” Says Labeur about her work.
Alongside the work on her book Labeur also made a book with the students of IBB. There’s only a single copy of this and it’s viewable at IBB. Every student could fill up 8 pages. Even tho the book is only filled with images it still manages to tell a story. The drawings were bound into a book with the help of restorer Peter van Dijk (of the National Archive).
On top of this Labeur also erected a ‘Monument for Shell.’ The monument is dedicated to a piece of Curacao history and not exactly meant as a honoring of the oil company. This monument is a mural on a decrepit house and is viewable in the Curacao Street in Otrabanda.
The final presentation on September 28^th of Labeur and the students was a big success. See more images on: [2]www.institutobuenabista.com
